When a Cayman investment manager makes sense, and how the delegation works

Senior-led investment management for fund structures that need real Cayman presence, oversight and discretion, with day-to-day portfolio work staying with your onshore team.

A Cayman investment manager built around your fund, not a template

Most managers don’t need a full Cayman build-out. They need a credible local presence that holds up to regulator, investor and counsel scrutiny, without adding a second operations team to run alongside the one they already have.

That’s the gap Artemis fills. We act as the Cayman-based investment manager between your fund and your onshore investment manager, holding discretion and governance responsibility in Cayman while agreed investment functions are delegated to your onshore team. Regulated by CIMA as a SIBA Registered Person and an Exempt Reporting Adviser with the SEC, we’re set up to take on the role properly, not to rubber-stamp it.

Where the model fits

The Cayman investment manager model tends to make sense in a few recurring situations:

  • Emerging and mid-sized managers who need a workable Cayman presence at launch without hiring on-island.
  • Established managers adding a Cayman vehicle and wanting local governance that isn’t a shell.
  • Structures with AIFMD requirements, including clean separation between portfolio management and risk oversight.
  • Firms testing a new strategy or product where a bespoke, flexible arrangement is more useful than a fixed platform.
  • Groups planning eventual internalisation who need a serious interim solution while a full licence is pursued.
  • Transitions between onshore managers, where continuity of the Cayman role matters.

How the delegation actually works

We scope the split explicitly at the outset. Artemis retains Cayman-side oversight, discretionary review, risk oversight, governance records and escalation of material matters. Defined portfolio management, research, advisory and execution functions stay with the onshore team. Counsel, the manager and service providers all know where responsibility sits, because it’s written down, not assumed.

Oversight cadence is proportionate to the strategy, liquidity profile and regulatory expectations of the structure. Involved enough to perform the role properly. Not so involved that we create drag on the manager’s day-to-day.

Artemis holds the Cayman role and exercises the discretion required. The onshore team keeps running the investment process. Both should feel that the arrangement works in practice, not just on paper.

What you get from working with us

  • Senior involvement, not platform delivery. The people scoping the engagement are the people doing the work.
  • A real Cayman footprint. On-island team, established relationships with local counsel and service providers, and no outsourced core functions.
  • Active governance. Board participation, documented decision-making, and practical challenge where it’s warranted.
  • A flexible model. From light-touch oversight to a higher-touch management responsibility, scoped to what the structure actually needs.
  • Honest advice. Including, when it applies, telling you the arrangement won’t work as proposed and why.

What we won’t do

We won’t take an appointment we can’t service properly, and we won’t quietly step into your investment process: the Cayman role is the Cayman role, and the onshore team should feel that clearly.

If a Cayman investment management arrangement is on the table, for launch, for a strategic shift, or as a bridge to something more permanent, the fastest way to know whether Artemis fits is a direct conversation with the people who’d run it.
